Under the direction of Gary Reis, Access Ambulance Service personnel are trained as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and receive regular continuing education courses while employed with the company.
In Rhode Island, EMT certification is managed by the state’s Department of Health and is divided into three categories: EMT-B (Basic), EMT-C (Cardiac), and EMT-P (Paramedic). Each of these categories has its own certification process, though the three share many of the same requirements.
Among other general requirements, all EMT applicants in Rhode Island must be high school graduates, at least 18 years of age, and able to demonstrate literacy and a vaccination record. Additionally, all applicants must complete CPR training and submit to a drug test and a criminal background check.
Once these requirements are met, aspiring EMTs should enroll in a state-approved EMT training program. After successfully completing the program, applicants must pass one of several exams, depending on the desired certification.
