The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) recognizes businesses that support military employees with a number of Department of Defense awards, including the Patriot Award. Only employees currently enrolled in the National Guard or Reserve, or a Guard or Reserve member's spouse, can make nominations for the Patriot Award. In addition, the nominee, generally a business leader or supervisor, must have provided a form of direct support to the person making the nomination. The Patriot Award has been designated as an honor for individuals and cannot be presented to entire staffs or organizations, although an employee can nominate as many individuals as they want.
Patriot Award winners demonstrate support to military employees in a variety of ways, such as allowing employees to take time off both before and after deployment, providing aid to an employee's family, and creating flexible work schedules. Other ESGR awards include the Pro Patria Award, the Extraordinary Employer Support Award, and the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
