Since 1996, Gary Reis has worked as president of Med Tech, Inc. and Med Tech Ambulance Services, both located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. When not working, Gary Reis supports numerous organizations including the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, where he is a member of the board of directors.
Established in 1979, the Alliance for Better Long Term Care protects the rights of disabled and elderly people who live in long-term care settings. It also helps those who receive hospice or licensed health care within their home. In addition, staff members and volunteers of the organization advocate for those who suffer from neglect, abuse, or financial exploitation.
The organization relies on volunteer ombudsmen for its program to run successfully. According to its website, almost half of all Rhode Island nursing home residents do not receive visits from friends or family. The volunteer ombudsmen listen, communicate, and offer empathy to elderly and disabled Rhode Island residents who receive long-term care. They devote three hours per week assisting residents at assigned facilities and partake in continuing education programs several times per year.
Prospective volunteers must submit two business-related letters of recommendation, attend a 36-hour training session, and pass a written test and criminal background check.
